Some time ago I ambled across A Modest Opinion column on The Flying Shingle, Gabriola Island's online news network, and would often find myself laughing in the corner of The Freakin' Coffeeshop. After a few interactions with the column's author, Natty Moher, I decided that the next obvious thing to do was to talk him into writing for wallfarmers. He agreed to subject himself to my abuse and has created a somewhat questionable 'art' project to start off his time here.

Natty's mumblings are witty, humorous and his contribution to the site is a completely selfish endeavor on my behalf. (..ummm, pretty well all the content on here is.) I'm quite certain you will be as entertained as I am by his writing style, content and strange facial hair growth.

__

wlfmrs: Ok.. let us start with your name.. what shall we call you?
Natty Natty Moher works for me... not even my mom calls me Nathaniel

wlfmrs what's with Izzy Jones?
Natty Izzy Jones is my sometimes rap name, when I decide I need to record a rap song...

wlfmrs You do some rapping? How long have you been a thug?
Natty I got thug life tattooed across my stomach in grade 7, however I've been recording tracks since I was 16 or so... didn't really do it much after I left high school -- but have recently started working on an EP

wlfmrs Hey, that's cool. What's the basis of your lyrics? Who does your beats?
Natty The EP I'm currently working on is my ode to old school rap... so they're quite self centered, like most things I write, but with a sense of irony. So far all the tracks on the EP are produced by Dusty Melo of Sweatshop / Pigeon Hole fame.

wlfmrs: ah, sweet. Dusty has a pretty rad mustache and his tracks are tight. Glad to hear you're serious about it.  Have you ever tried to grow a mustache? Do you have a mustache hero?
Natty This last Halloween I decided to go as Snydley Whiplash... but wanted to have some realism to the whole thing -- so I spent two months growing out a handle bar mustache... it was promptly shaved off on November 1st...  I did pumped Dusty's Mustache song quite a bit during that period though.  As for mustache hero, doesn't it have to be Tom Selleck?

wallfarmers[dot]ca

wlfmrs Good effort on the costume. You'll have to come to my Stachetober Fest party in October.. I'll tell you more about that later. That mustache song is the shit, but then so is his stache.  I think you are right, Selleck is today's top choice.
Let's back this up a sec...Where are you from and where are you now residing?
Natty:  I grew up on Gabriola Island, spent 18 years of my life there... moved to Vancouver where I was instantly considered a hippy -- but I've met real hippies and I am so far from o.  I currently live in Vancouver, in a basement suite with 12' ceilings

wlfmrs Nice.. sounds like your suite would be  bitch to heat, do you have to burn incense and seashells to keep in warm in there? :)
Natty: I have a oil barrel in which I burn the stuff my ex-girlfriend left behind in...

wlfmrs Yeah, lets get on this topic.. it was next on my list. Tell me about this gem. How long were you together? Where did you meet and why the hell can't you learn to use chopsticks?
Natty:  Her and I were together for about 2 and a half years... give or take... We met while I was in film school and she came out to be an extra in the short we were making... and chopsticks are just counter intuitive, they don't make any sense... and how people can eat rice with them is beyond me -- but one day I will learn, and she'll love me again

wallfarmers[dot]ca
...dude grows a MEAN neard!

wlfmrs Did she break up with you or did you break up with her?
Natty She broke up with me

wlfmrs Did you try writing her a hip hop song?
Natty No,  no hip hop song for her... though she didn't really like hip hop music, so it probably would have had the opposite effect if I had tried that

wlfmrs Oh, true. Does she know that you write stuff about her publicly?
Natty I can only assume she had googled my name... though I haven't talked to her since we did the return of stuff, but who doesn't google their ex's...  And I mean, I do it for her... right?
One day I'll write a joke funny enough about how she dumped me in Europe then she'll take me back.

wlfmrs Do you really want to get back together with her? I mean, if you have to convince someone to be with you, won't they just dump you again?
Natty I feel like that's why I need to change myself... so that when she takes me back I'm a better person

wlfmrs ah, ok.. you know what would be sweet though, to get her to take you back, then go to Mexico with her and dump her there. Wait.. don't listen to me. That's an awful idea.    Let's move on to flyingshingle.com. How did you get hooked up with that gig?
Natty When I still lived on Gabriola I wrote a satire column for the competing newspaper on the island (I know, funny, there are competing newspapers on Gabriola).  The new editor of the Shingle was a fan of my column back then, and when she took over she contacted me about writing something for them and the rest, as they say, is history

wlfmrs Gabriola has TWO papers? I can't imagine there's enough news to fill one. Anyway, that's cool. Are there any other venues you write for?
Natty I use to write for backofthebook.ca, and now they link my Modest Opinion on their front page.  And then I sometimes post things over on my website nathanielmoher.com...

wlfmrs Do you write as a job or do you have something less/more creative to pay the bills?
Natty I currently still have to write only to impress girls and my dad -- which hasn't worked for me yet. I work in the film industry to pay the rent on my sweet basement suite with 12' ceilings....

wallfarmers[dot]ca
...action shot...
wlfmrs Is your dad a writer?
Natty My dad is a writer yes, he's a playwrite and also works as a freelance journalist

wlfmrs Neato! What do you do in the film industry? Does it involve leather?
Natty I work as a fluffer... how'd you know?  No, I work as an Assistant Production Coordinator... which sound more impressive then it actually is (it probably doesn't sound that impressive)

wlfmrs Oh, I have a friend who used to do that..the assistant job, not the other thing. He said he worked his ass off and was not nearly as glamorous as it should be. Are you on the t.v. or commercial side?
Natty:  Yea, I usually spend about 14 hours in an office a day... I mainly work in TV and Feature Films

wlfmrs You probably get to work with a lot of people and you seem to me like a bit of a shit disturber when you get the chance, have you pulled and rad sabotages?
Natty unfortunately in the film industry your name is everything... so though I'm still sure people only hire me because I'm eye candy and make witty comments, I have yet to sabotage anything -- 'cause I'm still not really paid to write, and don't have a girlfriend to live with

wlfmrs Fair enough. If you think of one, let me know and I'll sneak on set and pull it off for you. I'm all about that shit when I have co-workers.   So, tell me Natty, what do you know about art?
Natty What do I know about art huh?  I know you hang it on your walls, and it's all up for interpretation

wlfmrs That's about it really.  How did you hear about wallfarmers?
Natty Via Twitter some how, maybe a follow friday sort of thing

wallfarmers[dot]ca

wlfmrsSo now that I've convinced you to correspond for me, what's your first project?
Natty My first project is going to be "Philistine: One mans attempt to win back his ex-girlfriend… and learn art."  Which, without giving away too much, is my quest to become a famous artist in an attempt to win back my ex-girlfriend

wlfmrs I'm very excited about this! Have you told anyone else you are doing this? Are you letting anyone help you book shows or are you doing this 100% on your own?
Natty:  As of now it's 100% on my own... I'm sure along my quest I will meet people who will help me out... but I feel like to grow as a person, like my ex told me I needed to do, I have to branch out on my own and become a famous artist

wlfmrs What's your idea of a famous artist? How do you measure that?
Natty Good question... getting to paint a ceiling?  ummm, I figure if I can sell one of my paintings then I'll have achieve something... and I mean, as the title states, the obvious goal is to win back my ex

wlfmrs What if you don't win her back but become well known for your art, will you still consider the project a success?
Natty no... well, wait, maybe as like a revenge thing -- like "you didn't take me back, but check it out, I'm a famous artist."  Yea, that could be good

wlfmrs ..or get a new girlfriend? A lot of guy artists I know have said that they got into art because chicks dig artists.
Natty That's why I started writing, but slowly found that girls don't like a guy who spend hours in front of a computer creating life instead of living a life... but it could work out, art to pick up chicks

wlfmrs Very true. Think that goes for some artists too. Too much time in front of the canvas. No one wins, everyone wins..whatever, there's always beer.    Speaking of, what's the last embarrassing thing you did while drunk?

...for the record.. Natty has been typing for a long time... must be a good story.

wallfarmers[dot]caNatty:  I'm not an embarrassing drunk... I'm a happy drunk; but my greatest drinking story goes like this (sorry mom!).  One night me and two buddies decided to go out and see one of our favourite groups (the creaking planks), and during the process of the show I ended up taking back about 14 moosehead... when the show was done one of my buddies who was staying at the Sutton Place, which is a hotel downtown, was like "lets go back to the bar at the hotel and keep drinking" -- which I, drunkenly, decided was a great idea.  Back at the Sutton bar I proceeded to have 3 rum and cokes... and then we all decided to call it a night.  The one buddy just went up to his room at the Sutton, me and my other friend left.  He hoped in a cab and left me to fend for myself downtown.  I knew, however, that there was a bus that I could catch to my house somewhere on Burrard street, so I started walking looking for it... after about 3 minutes I gave up and decided to just walk home.  At this point I was living in Kits and it would have been about a 2 - 2 1/2 hour walk, but I figured I could do it... I started walking it and then my phone rang.  "hello?"  "natty, where are you?"  (it was one of my other friends) "um, Burrard and Nelson, why?"  "I thought that was you... get in the car."  And then this car made a u-turn and stop right beside me opened the door and I got in.  So, luckily for me, one of my friends just happened to be driving down Burrard street at 2 in the morning or I probably would have fallen off the Burrard street bridge.  Best part of the whole story is I woke up the next day and did not have a hangover.
I also asked my ex-girlfriend out for the first time while drunk

wlfmrs Oh man.. I thought you were going to say that you got in a stranger's car. That would have been kind of awesome. Good story though.. both of them. YIKES.
Back to the art thing.. do you have any artists that are inspiring you with this wallfarmers project?
Natty I mean, bringing it back to the whole hip hop thing, I've obviously been around a lot of graffiti in my day... but I want to span the whole gamut while doing the project... Abstract, Cubism, Pointilism, realism, surrealism, some of these may be the same thing... but I want to try it all

wlfmrs Nice.. I hope people get interactive with you. Do you want me to leave a comment section on your posts?
Natty Totally, I need people to give me input -- they only way I can improve as an artist is to be flamed by real artists on the internet

wlfmrs HAH so totally true! Well said.
Well, I saw over on Twitter that you were whining about wanting to get outside so I guess I'll let you go. Do you have any questions before you start your quest?
Natty The only question I have is how far you will let this go before you realize what a terrible mistake you have made giving me this opportunity
...and secondly, where does one buy art making stuff

wlfmrs Well, Natty, I'm just not sure. There are two things I enjoy in life, watching some succeed and watching others fail in a hot mess. I guess we'll see what happens. Either way, I'm very excited to have you on board! From politics to bondage, your writing style is clever and entertaining and I hope you enjoy your time with wallfarmers.
In Vancouver, there is a cool little shop on Main St. by Gene (coffee shop). They old guy in there is a really kind human and he has a ton of neat art stuffs. Opus is good for some things but if you are industrious, try craigslist for people getting rid of art supplies and thrift stores for frames and canvases you can paint over.
Before you go.. anything else I should know about you?
Natty I enjoy long walks on the beach, night cuddled up in front of a romantic comedy, with a glass of wine, and listening....

the black silky shirt look is what I've now adopted since becoming an artist... I think it's appropriate attire.
